Sansepolcro and the Upper Tiber Valley

Sansepolcro and the Upper Tiber Valley

The Land of "Piero", crossroad of peoples and cultures

VALTIBERINA or UPPER TIBER VALLEY has always been a crossroads of different people and cultures thanks to its being located between Tuscany, Umbria, Marche and Emilia-Romagna. The landscape and the architecture of this territory still retains the various influences of the neighbouring regions. The small but precious art cities of Sansepolcro and Anghiari constitute the main settlements of the Upper Tiber Valley, together with castles, parish churches, abbeys and hill towns. The countryside is fully cultivated with tobacco, whereas its green woods are rich in excellent mushrooms and truffles often present in the local cuisine.

SANSEPOLCRO, founded around the year 1000 as oratory to house the relics of the Holy Sepulcre, then powerful Abbey of the Camaldoli monks, the town retains its original small urban centre decorated by fine renaissance palaces. Famous especially for giving birth to Piero della Francesca at the beginning of the XV century, it exhibits several masterpieces of the artist like the “Madonna della Misericordia” and the “Resurrection” in its Town Museum. The Cathedral dedicated to S. John the Evangelist shows beautiful artworks of the XIV and XV centuries and a very old crucifix of the IX-X century called “Holy Face”. Other interesting buildings are the Church of S. Francis, the Medici Renaissance Fortress, planned by Giuliano da Sangallo and the area at the centre called Piazza di Torre di Berta (where on the second Sunday of September the Crossbow Palio takes place), the Town Hall Palace (Palazzo delle Laudi) and Piero’s house. Sansepolcro is known for its production of extraordinary embroideries and laces, in addition to gold and silver jewellery.

ANGHIARI, of Roman origin, was an important medieval and renaissance hill town, as one can see from the ancient buildings that run along the quaint and steep streets of its historic centre. The extraordinary charme of this walled hill town is felt just by walking along its narrow streets, and a visit to the elegant Palazzo Taglieschi Museum uncovers superb medieval and renaissance sculptures like a painted Madonna by Jacopo della Quercia and terracottas by the Della Robbia school, in addition to interesting handicrafts related to popular traditions, domestic life and farm works.

MONTERCHI is a small urban centre located north of Arezzo on the way to Sansepolcro, nowadays important because of the presence of the “Madonna del Parto” (Our Lady of Childbirth), an extraordinary fresco that Piero della Francesca painted in 1455 for the chapel of nearby church of S. Maria in Momentana, removed in 1992 and now housed in the town museum.

CAPRESE MICHELANGELO, known as birth town of Michelangelo Buonarroti, is perched on top of a steep hill dominated by the massive ruins of its ancient castle.

PIEVE SANTO STEFANO had ancient origins until everything was destroyed during World War II. The community set up a Diary Archive for the purpose of preserving the memories of the town.
